There's a smart new burger joint in my home town and not only is it delivering delicious food to its customers but the idea behind it is a great one that I wanted to share here on the blog today.
Gigney's which opened in Windsor in February, is a gourmet burger restaurant with a difference. Aside from the fact that its food is delightful and the interior divine and welcoming, it's also a restaurant at the heart of the community that's aiming to give something back.
Staffed by hospitality students and apprentices from the local college alongside experienced managers and chefs, the idea behind this enterprise is to offer training, encouragement and support to those looking to get their start in a career in hospitality. Offering them valuable hands on experience in this lovely restaurant and helping to build their skills and confidence at the same time.
They are also intent on supporting the local community by using local suppliers and produce wherever possible.
I visited with a friend for a bite to eat after work a few weeks back and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The students really are at the very forefront of the project and are completely hands on in providing the customer service as well as working busily away in the kitchen making their delicious burgers, sides and desserts.
Between us we tried out the Classic Cheeseburger and the Tikkalicious Chicken Burger - the winning burger from the opening competition to design a burger for the new menu. Accompanied by a portion of hand cut fries and onion rings to share plus a couple of cocktails, this delicious combination made for a lovely evening catching up with a friend and eating great food.
The service was friendly and attentive and at no point did we ever feel rushed which is something I always really appreciate when I'm deep in conversation learning all the latest updates with friends!
In all it was a lovely experience and I plan to whisk the other half there very soon to show him exactly what it's all about.
I really wish this restaurant all the very best and hope that the community of Windsor and the surrounding towns and visitors offer it their support. I love the idea of providing students and new graduates with a place to gain hands on experience. With such delicious food and a welcoming environment on offer it has all the hallmarks of a great success.
If you're ever in the area make sure you pop in, say hi and sample a burger and a cocktail or two!
