Feel Like You've Hit A Wall? Don't Give Up!

WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP GOING EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE QUITTING

Stuck in a rut? Feel like you're not getting anywhere fast? Fed up and wondering whether you're completely barking up the wrong tree? That was me a few weeks ago. So let me tell you a little story ...

Just before Christmas, sat in the airport nursing a lukewarm glass of wine ahead of our trip to India, I had an unexpected mini cry about work to my other half. Now I'm sure the pre-flight drink was partly to blame! But ultimately I was feeling a bit lost and disheartened with where everything was going. It felt like I'd hit a really, really BIG brick wall. Too big to go around, under, over or through. My head was foggy and, although I was trying my best, it felt like nothing was good enough. I was feeling very stuck, I'd just posted that morning about switching off for the festive break and in all honestly I wasn't sure if I was going to switch back on again! But what felt like a massive cloud right then was really a fleeting moment looking back a month or so onwards.

So here's why I believe that you shouldn't give up on something you're passionate about even when it feels like it's all gone a little too dark to see your way through. Whatever your circumstances or situation may be, it's always worth pushing on with something that you believe in. So if this is you right now then today let me try and offer you some of the encouragement you probably desperately need and I know you really very much deserve.

WHEN YOU'RE FEELING LOST JUST TRY AND REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING ...

For all of the negative there's plenty of positive, you just have to find it: For some reason, so many of us only tune in to the negative. Despite every email I get from someone thanking me for the work I've done and offering me praise, despite every lovely positive comment you lovely readers leave me here on this blog, despite every time a friend or family member tells me I'm doing good, often I'll still only hear in my head that one negative thing that one person happened to flippantly say to me a few months ago! Anyone else do that? Well this is why we have to constantly remind ourselves of the positive things that come our way and make a conscious effort to treasure them.

Why have you hit that wall? Is there anything practical you can do to help yourself? For me I realised that part of the reason I was feeling so stuck was because I'd gotten a little out of my depth. My knowledge with regards to how to move things on further had ultimately hit a plateau. Sometimes it's purely practical things that are holding you back. Ask yourself where your weaknesses are and identify possible ways to fix them. Perhaps you need to undertake more training, or do something to gain more experience in a certain area? Taking positive action in helping yourself grow can really shift you into the next gear and give you the confidence you need to move forward.

You never know what's waiting just around the corner: So I got on the aforementioned plane feeling blue in London and by the time I'd landed in Delhi there was an email waiting in my inbox from a company I adore asking if I could do some freelance work for them. Work that has since led on to other exciting things. It can literally be a matter of hours from down-and-out to on top of the world. So ride the waves and hold on tight. You never know what unexpected excitement is waiting just down the line!

Perfection doesn't equal success: If you're beating yourself up because your vision of success doesn't match the often messy reality of real life then stop. Being successful doesn't mean getting it right all of the time. In fact it's the opposite. It means trying, failing and learning, over and over again. And that's a process to embrace not to scold yourself for.

Nothing worth fighting for is ever easily won: Everyone who is putting themselves out there to achieve something a little different in life will tell you that it isn't easy. But with the right attitude, a little help and encouragement, and a will to persevere, you can carve out your unique place in this world and make it one that you're proud of.

You're probably doing far better than you think you are: In fact I know you are because we're always our harshest critics and we are always doing far better than we give ourselves credit for. I'm sure if you take a moment to look back a few months and really assess what you've done, you'll be amazed by just how much you've actually achieved.

Everything in life is a learning curve: There will always be ups and downs whatever you do in life. I'll turn here to a well known but very relevant quote suitable for the cloudy moments in both work and life: "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning how to dance in the rain!" Vivian Greene

Haters gonna hate you just have to forget about them: I'll never stop everyone from judging me and nor will you. There are people out there who don't understand you, just as perhaps sometimes you don't understand the thoughts and actions of others. Focus on what you're doing and stay strong. Use any negativity to drive you on to do better and to succeed despite any judgement. Plus the next time you maybe feel yourself moving to make swift analysis of someone else's choices in the workplace or indeed in life, step back for a moment and remember what it feels like when the same thing happens to you.

So take a good long look at all of the positives, the small things that make up where you are right now. Maybe sign yourself up for some training to take you to the next level at work and push you outside of your comfort zone. Or if you need a short break for a while take it, so that you can come back with a fresh perspective. But don't give up just yet. You really never know what's waiting just around the corner x
