Beauty And Wellbeing Tips For Busy Skin With Skincare Specialist Kerry Payne

WORKING IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY PLUS TOP SKINCARE TIPS FOR HECTIC LIFESTYLES

You may remember way back in November I attended the first Thirty Plus Blogs event at OMNIYA Health and Beauty Mediclinic in Knightsbridge. Well today I'm very excited to share with you an interview with one of their top practitioners Kerry Payne, an Advanced Skincare Specialist with over 12 years expert experience in her field. Today Kerry is sharing with us a little about her career and how she got started as well as some useful and practical tips for looking after tired skin as part of a busy working lifestyle. So without further ado ...

Hi Kerry. Please could you tell me a little more about your role as a skincare specialist and what a typical day involves?

My role as an advanced skincare specialist at OMNIYA changes every day. I always arrive 30 minutes before my shift starts so that I can go through my notes on the clients I'm seeing that day; each client has a totally bespoke treatment plan, so it’s important I’m fully up to speed on all their treatments and any issues. I see a wide variety of skin conditions and concerns, so I make sure I’m always researching new treatments and ingredients - I want my clients to feel totally confident when they see me that I’ll get them the very best results.

I love chatting with my clients and as well as looking after their skin, it can sometimes become a bit of a therapy session as well! My most popular treatment is a bespoke facial, so I work with the client to find out what they're looking for and how we can best achieve this, normally with a combination of facials, peels, LED treatment, micro needling and home care products. I work really closely with the other expert practitioners, so if there's anything I think can help the client (perhaps seeing the hormone specialists, a consult with the clinical nutritionist or a chat with our cosmetic doctor) I will always refer them. It makes the client’s life so much easier when everything is all under one roof.

In-between seeing clients we have a lot of walk-ins to the clinic, so I do skin consultations and help customers with their skincare choices. We have a great variety of products available including ZO Skin Health By Dr Zein Obagi, SkinCeuticals, AQ Solutions, TA65, Environ, as well as traditional French pharmacy brands.

What led you to this kind of work and what kind of training is involved?

I grew up in a family that loved health and beauty and a lot of my family members actually worked in the industry, so although I had the usual worries about what I was going to do when I was in my final years of school, it was the natural route. I’ve always loved skincare and when my sister suggested I try beauty therapy, I realised it was exactly what I’d been looking for. I can be quite competitive, when I do something I want to be the best at it! That's why I chose one of the most prestigious beauty therapy courses that allowed me to work in the UAE and America, as well as the UK.

What is it that you love most about the work you do and what motivates you on a daily basis?

My job is all about the people, so I love making clients happy and helping them to improve their skin concerns. When people are suffering from acne or other skin issues it can have a real knock on their confidence and self esteem. If I can help people feel good about themselves then I’m happy. Hopefully the fact that I have a lot of regular clients means I’m doing exactly that.

What are the biggest challenges people face when it comes to looking after their skin in today’s busy, hectic working world?

I believe the biggest challenge for most people is the lack of time they have to look after themselves. I try and create home-care regimes that fit in with their busy lifestyles and deliver results they need. The world of skincare can be a confusing one as well. I try to be as knowledgeable as possible about ingredients and formulations, so I can advise clients without them having to spend time decoding all the marketing-speak!

Do you have any simple, practical tips that readers could implement right away to help look after their skin - especially when faced with very busy lifestyles?

I believe the most important thing is to get your basic skincare routine down. Follow the below every day and then you can add in more targeted treatment products as and when you need them:

1. Find a good cleanser that’s suited to your skin type to remove impurities.

2. Then layer on your serums – look for ones with Vitamin C (essential antioxidant protection) and Hyaluronic Acid (for plumping and hydrating the skin).

3. Finish with a high factor SPF in the morning or a retinol at night.

Looking after your inner health is also incredibly important for your skin; try and eat a balanced, healthy diet, drink lots of water, and look into supplements with vitamins A, C and E. We have an incredible clinical nutritionist at OMNIYA who gives helpful, practical advice if you’re looking for help.

How do you like to unwind after a long day and what are your top tips for looking after your wellbeing amidst a busy lifestyle?

After a long day on my feet and chatting to people I always unwind with a relaxing bath and a Neom Organics bath oil and a candle. If I’m not too exhausted, I’ll read my book. Looking after my health and wellbeing is really important, as I need a lot of energy to do my job. I always try and get nine hours sleep, drink between 2–3 litres of water a day and make sure my diet is full of greens. We stock a great range of supplements, so I make sure I’m taking what my body needs and always have regular hormone checks with our specialists.

Desktop Nails: Spring Picks Suitable For The Office

The recent bank holiday has left me feeling all spring like! Despite the spell of stormy weather over the weekend here in the UK, we still had the odd glimpse of spring sunshine with clearer skies and a hope of brighter times ahead. Today I've been having a rifle through some of my makeup and nail varnish stash, still trying to get more organised following our move, and I stumbled upon three of my all time favourite neutral nail colours just perfect for welcoming the season of spring into the office.

Desktop Nails: Spring Picks Suitable For The Office

I love the pretty pastel colours out there, the blues, greens, lilacs. Yet these aren't always necessarily workspace, meeting-friendly styles. Sometimes you just can't beat a trusty nude, pale-pink or neutral that's quick and easy to apply, looks smart and chic for work and is also equally easy to remove ahead of a wilder choice for the weekend! These three all fall in to this very category and are very well tried and trusted. Staple polishes that you can always rely on and that are well worth adding to your collection. So without further ado let's take a look at my top three picks for the office this spring.

1. From left to right, first on the list is the subtle pink offering, Revlon Classy. I love the formula of Revlon nail varnish but trouble often comes with the paler colours that require a multitude of coats to get any effect and yet still remain watery and streaky. Well this colour causes no such trouble with an opaque finish that satisfies with even one coat. So if you're looking for a very quick fix of perfect but subtle pink colour then this is a great option. It's by no means one of Revlon's newest releases but for me it's an old faithful that never fails to deliver.

2. Sally Hansen Mauve Along pictured in the centre is a delicate pale mauve that I adore, think of an ever so subtle tinge of lilac in a lovely neutral disguise. This colour glides on effortlessly for a smart finish that leaves you feeling put together for both work and play! Just two quick coats and you'll achieve a ready to go, fully opaque look. This varnish is also extremely glossy. I admit I rarely ever use a topcoat anyway but with this colour you just don't need to. This really is one of my all time favourite picks for super smart nails in a flash.

3. Last but by no means least is the beautiful Leighton Denny High Performance Colour in the shade Supermodel. If pinky or mauve based colours such as the above aren't quite for you then this lovely mink colour might be just what you're looking for. I've loved this ever since it initially came into my life via a freebie on a magazine! I've repurchased since which is actually quite rare for me and nail varnish, but that's how often I love to reach for this shade. Again it's a really easy one to apply - you may well sense a theme here, I can't be doing with lots of faffing when it comes to painting my own nails!

All three of these picks are pretty hard wearing and chip resistant. Plus that's part of the beauty of neutral shades such as these, tiny chips when they do start to appear don't notice nearly as much as with bolder colours, allowing you to get away with it for longer!

I'm intrigued to know what your all time favourite nail colours are? What recommendations do you have suitable for days that you need to be a little smarter in the office? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

3 Festive Makeup Favourites

This time of year it's great to reach for products that will lift your complexion, give winter skin a glow and get you into the festive, cosy and party spirit! So today I've picked out three makeup bag staples that I always reach for when winter falls and when prepping for a party or seasonal get together. Take a look at these pretty picks, plus let me know what your most faithful makeup tips are when the holiday season comes around?

3 Festive Makeup Favourites

I'll begin with the MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle.

This beauty has been in my kit for a while now and I always reach for it to pep up my look before heading off on a night out, especially during the winter months. I love to use this as a highlighter, or if I'm feeling very brave and in need of more serious sparkle then I will use this very lightly over more of the full face (with care and within reason!) for a shimmering but subtle finish. It's also great in the corner of the eye, to wake and brighten up your look!

Next on the list is the very bright looking beauty that is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Diffused Heat. Now this might appear extremely bright pink and a little intimidating in the pan, but used wisely, this blush gives a beautiful rosy finish to seasonal winter cheeks. It's great for really adding colour to grey and dull winter skin. Perfect for a night out and such a beautiful finish and texture. This is top of my 'always reach for' list every time right now and I"m loving it!

Last but not least, I am totally and utterly in love with the Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Raisin and just cannot get enough of this rich winter, plummy brown beauty.

This colour is the perfect match for the much darker, winter wardrobe and goes beautifully with black, khaki, plums and rich greens. The sort of colours I love to bust out clothing wise at this time of year. I find it just about subtle enough for the day, depending on the occasion, and a total beauty, if applied more liberally, for an evening look. With a creamy and semi-matte finish, you can achieve a chic and classy look but without the full on drying effect of most other matte lipsticks. So in love with this right now, and think I will be for a long while yet!

Do you have any of these items in your winter makeup collection? What are your top picks for the colder and darker months to help lift and enlighten festive skin?

Desktop Beauty: Haunting Halloween Makeup Picks

Now Halloween fans please don't be annoyed but this particular seasonal celebration isn't really one that I get all that excited about. That said, if you're heading straight off to a Halloween party this coming Friday following a day in the office, or simply want to pick up some makeup 'trick or treats' to enhance this spooky weekend and the coming winter season, then I'm sharing my top picks for adding some chic 'all hallows eve' sparkle to your most ghoulish of outfits!

Sally Hansen Red Zin

One of the best ways to immediately vamp up your look is to add a definite and strong colour to your nails. Now dark colours can be a real pain to paint and who has time for that when you've had a hectic week at work and need to run out of the door?

That's why I recommend picking up this fabulous blood red polish, the Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Polish Red Zin.

Oh how I love this colour. It's vibrant and so very easy to apply, even if you haven't got a lot of time to spare. You can actually get away with one coat in this if you really need to move it. You'll still get a lovely bright red result. Or if you have the time then build it up to a heavier, richer red with a few coats and be sure to unleash the inner vamp in you!

Charlotte Tilbury Bond Girl

Next up a subtle and sultry lipstick that oozes glamour. The Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Bond Girl.

Now there are of course much darker, deeper and more frightening Halloween lip colours out there but I wanted to include this one for anyone who's not necessarily wanting to wear a deep dark colour but is after something that will still make their finished look feel sharp and polished.

Layer this up to increase its depth and fall in love with the muted plummy colour and matte finish. Plus with the release of the new Bond movie this week, it seems only right to include this pick in here for more than just Halloween related reasons.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Shadowstick Blackmail

When it comes to smudging out the eyes into a much heavier and smokier look then I really love to reach for these chunky shadow sticks from Rimmel. This one is the Scandaleyes Shadow Stick in Blackmail and it's exactly what you need for that dark and dangerous Halloween finish.

If you're literally going to be rushing out of the office door without any time to re-do your makeup for the evening then you can add this to your daytime look, smudge it in, work it around and create a deeper and fuller finish for the night ahead of you. A true smoky eye staple in my book.

Finally, for that special finishing touch add one of these simple but effective glitter costume masks from Asos and you're good to go from office to party in just a few simple steps.

Have a great Halloween everyone!
